Roland Young

Roland Young ( born November 11, 1887 in London, England; † 5 June 1953 in New York City, New York) was an American film and theater actor of British origin.

Life

Roland Young, son of an architect, enjoyed at Sherborne College and later at London University, his schooling before he decided to become an actor. The necessary knowledge acquired Young at the renowned Royal Academy of Dramatic Art in 1908, at the age of 21 years, Young was the first time in London on the stage, before he gave his debut on Broadway just four years later, in December 1912. Until the mid- 1910s Young took true nor engagements in England, so that he was from a theatrical performance to the other often on the road. 1918 Young received the U.S. citizenship, and then served for a short time on the American side as a soldier in the First World War. His debut as a film actor was Young in 1922 as Doctor Watson in Sherlock Holmes, at the side of John Barrymore. Shortly before, he had in September 1921, his first wife Marjorie Kummer married, with whom he was married until October 1940.

Young's role offers were mostly confined to British characters, in which he embodied the stereotypical image of an aristocratic Englishman. His most famous film was the 1937 comedy film produced toppers - The blonde specter, 1938, received an Oscar nomination for Best Supporting Actor for the Young. Both 1938 and 1941 was Young in sequels of the film also on camera. With the exception of the Topper series today Youngs movies mostly just movie lovers are well known. Also his appearance as a villain in George Cukor's Uriah Heep Dickens adaptation David Copperfield are known (1935 ) and in 1936 produced fantasy film The man who wanted to change the world.

Roland Young, who divorced his wife Marjorie in October 1940, took place in April 1948 with Dorothy Patience May DUCROZ his second wife, with whom he spent the last years of his life together. Roland Young had no children. He died at the age of 65 of natural causes. Today, two star bearing his name on the Walk of Fame.
