Rolando Garbey

Rolando Garbey ( born November 19, 1947 in Santiago de Cuba ) is a former Cuban boxer. He was the first boxer to win an Olympic medal for Cuba. He is the uncle of Ramón Garbey.

Amateur

Garbey won in 1967 at Light Middleweight ( 71kg - ) with a final victory over Víctor Galíndez, Argentina, the Pan American Games. At the Olympic Games in the following year Garbey reached after beating Eamonn McCusker, Ireland ( TKO 1 ), Detlef Dahn, East Germany ( 3-2 ), Eric Blake, Germany (KO 1 ), and John Baldwin, United States ( 4:1 ), the final, which he against the defending champion Boris Lagutin, Soviet Union (5-0 ), lost and therefore the first Cubans won a Boxmedaille.

In 1970 Garbey the Central American and Caribbean Games in 1971 and the second time the Pan Games. In the 1972 Olympics he won against Ricky Barnor, Ghana (5-0 ), Franz Csandl, Austria (5-0 ) and Jae Keun Lim, South Korea ( TKO 2 ), but had to be in the quarterfinals of the Poles and later silver medalist Wieslaw beaten Rudkowski (4:1). In the same year also won the Central American and Caribbean Championships, a title he also won the following year.

In 1974 Garbey defend his title at the Central American and Caribbean Games and won with a final victory over Alfredo Lemus, Venezuela ( 3:2 ), the inaugural World Championships. In 1975, he won for the second time the gold medals at the Pan American Games.

In 1976 Garbey again in the Olympics and arrived after victories over Dashnian Olzwoi, Mongolia (KO 3 ), Earl Liburd, U.S. Virgin Islands (RSC 2 ), and Kalevi Kosunen, Finland ( RSC 1 ), the semi-finals, which he lost to Tadija Kačar, Soviet Union ( 4-1) and thus won the bronze medal.

He later became coach of Guillermo Rigondeaux.
