Rolex GMT Master II

The GMT- Master is a watch model of Rolex Company. It is produced since 1954.

Origin of this clock

Presented was the GMT-Master in 1954. Was the result of a tender of the company Pan Am. This was a wristwatch that can display at least two time zones simultaneously for its pilots and flight attendants. Rolex then designed a clock that could represent a second time zone with the help of a fourth pointer.

Second time zone ( GMT function )

The fourth pointer is a character feature of this clock. This is a second hour hand with a triangular tip. This does not rotate every 12, but only once every 24 hours completely over the dial. The time shows this second hour hand not on the normal dial of the clock on, but on a mounted around the dial around bezel. Accordingly, this bezel also has a 24- hour scale. The "normal" 12-hour hand can be adjusted in one-hour jumps without showing minutes, seconds, and the 24- hour hand is affected. Thus, the carrier of this clock is capable of using these quick adjustment of the "normal " hour hand quickly switch to a new local time zone when the clock stops and during the 24 hour hand continues to indicate the home time.

The bezel is rotatable in both directions. By appropriately rotating the bezel clockwise or counter -clockwise, you can quickly capture different time zones so with help from the 24 hour hand. In its original version, the bezel was decorated in blue and red, to commemorate the day and night.

Using the 24- hour hand can also find out pretty much where north is. You point the normal hour hand at the sun and the 24 hour hand then points to the north. This only works when both hands indicate the exact local time.

The current GMT-Master

The current GMT- Master II since 2007 is similar at first glance, little of the old GMT-Master. The aluminum bezel has been replaced with a black bezel made of ceramic, in which the digits milled and platinum ( for stainless steel model) or with gold are steamed ( with the models in gold). It should thus be scratch resistant. Other functions such as gradual switching of the hour hand are left intact. The clock is also still chronometer certified and specified by the manufacturer to 100 m (10 bar) water resistant.

2013 a new version of the GMT Master II was introduced at Baselworld, in which the two-tone ceramic bezel is black and blue ( night - day) and the GMT hand is accordingly not colored blue.
