Rolls-Royce RB.108

The RB.108 is a very simple design and lightweight jet engine of the British manufacturer Rolls- Royce from the 1950s. Due to the special nature of the shaft bearing and the type of lubrication system, the engine is especially designed for vertical installation in aircraft.

History

The development of RB.108 was announced in November 1955. The Typenprüfschub was 9 kN (2030 lb), in addition to 11 % of this thrust and bleed air to the control devices of a VTOL aircraft that take control about all three axes at the hover to be delivered. The thrust -to-weight ratio as an important parameter for the suitability as a lift engine is 8:1. The development of RB.108 constitutes RB.145

Use

  • Short SC.1: RB.108 five, four lift engines, a cruise engine
  • Dassault Balzac V: eight RB.108 as lift engines
  • VFW SG 1262: eight RB.108 in suspension frame for testing the control devices of the VFW - Fokker VAK 191B
  • Projected use in various unrealized projects from the late 1950s.
