Rolls-Royce RB.211

The Rolls- Royce RB211 series includes the jet engines of the middle thrust class of the British manufacturer Rolls- Royce. These are modern turbofan or turbofan engines with high bypass ratio.

History

In the late 1960s made Rolls -Royce Lockheed for their under development widebody aircraft L -1011 TriStar an offer for a modern turbofan engine. It was the model RB211, which should provide a lower fuel consumption and less noise than competing models of General Electric and Pratt & Whitney next high thrust. Unlike its competitors, it was developed as a three- shaft design, making it contained less parts and lighter and more compact precipitated. Due to technical problems, the planned for 1971 delivery was delayed. Financial difficulties led in early 1971 to the bankruptcy of Rolls- Royce and the subsequent nationalization of the company. After a thorough revision of the engine was finally approved in the execution RB211 - 22C in the spring of 1972.

The variant RB211 -524 is a further development of higher thrust, the 747 could secure a significant share of the power plant equipment especially in the Boeing. It has a fan diameter of 2.192 m, a length of 3.175 m, a dry mass of 4277 kg and a bypass ratio of 4.1:1.

The variant RB211 -535 is a specially developed for the Boeing 757 version and first flew in 1983. Around 70 percent of all built Boeing 757 were equipped with this option. An engine version RB211 - 535E4 holds with more than 40,000 flight hours in over 9 years, the record for the longest period of use on an aircraft without overhauling.
