Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Adelaide

The Archdiocese of Adelaide (Latin: Archidioecesis Adelaidensis ) is a Roman Catholic archdiocese based in Adelaide, Australia.

History

On April 5, 1842 by Pope Gregory XVI. the Apostolic Vicariate of Adelaide ( " Adelaidensis " ) from the Vicariate founded in 1834 " New Holland and Van Diemen's Land " out founded. On April 22, 1842, the survey was conducted to the diocese of Adelaide. 1845 was the spin-off of the Apostolic Vicariate of King George sounde - The Sound, two years later, the inclusion in the Diocese of Adelaide and Diocese of Perth. On May 10, 1887 by Leo XIII. the appointment to the archbishopric, at the same time the spin-off of the Diocese of Porta Augusta, Port Pirie diocese since 1951.

The first Catholic Church was built in 1845 in Adelaide and 1846 in Morphett Vale. The first part of " St. Francis Xavier 's Cathedral " in Adelaide was opened in 1858. The Archdiocese of Adelaide and the Diocese of Port Pirie entertain among other 104 Catholic schools with about 46,000 students (as of 2006).

The diocese is shattered in the years 2010 to 2012 by the publication of a series of child abuse cases by Catholic clerics.
