Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Athens

The Archdiocese of Athens (Latin: Archidioecesis Atheniensis ) is a location in Greece Roman Catholic archdiocese based in Athens. The Archbishop is also Apostolic Administrator for the Archdiocese of Rhodes.

History

Its origins go but back to the Crusades. Already in 1205 a Latin archbishopric was founded, which was repealed in 1483, then it was a titular.

Anton Prokesch from the east in 1835 President of the Church administration council of Catholics in Athens and in 1839 started the construction of a church in a prominent location in Piraeus in November. Although by 1853 had begun with the construction of the cathedral, the archbishopric was founded only on July 23, 1875 back again.

The cathedral is dedicated to St. Dionysius the Areopagite. Paul Patron of the diocese is of Tarsus. Catholic churches outside of Athens and Piraeus are ever yet in Patras, Nafplio and Aspra Spitia.

The Archdiocese of Athens are subject to the Holy See directly, so it is exemt. It has no other suffragan dioceses.

The Archdiocese comprises the historical landscape of central Greece and the Peloponnese. Thus, it includes the regions of Attica, Peloponnese, Western Greece and Central Greece.
