Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Calcutta

The Archdiocese of Calcutta (lat.: Archidioecesis Calcuttensis ) is a located in India Roman Catholic archdiocese based in Kolkata.

History

The Archdiocese of Calcutta was founded on April 18, 1834 by Pope Gregory XVI. built with the Apostolic Constitution latissimi Terrarum out of territory of the Diocese of São Tomé Meliapore as Apostolic Vicariate of Bengal. On February 15, 1850, Apostolic Vicariate of Bengal were from parts of its territory to the founding of the Apostolic Vicariate of East Bengal. 1850 the Vicariate Apostolic of Bengal was renamed as Apostolic Vicariate of Western Bengal. The Apostolic Vicariate of West Bengal from 1870 were parts of its territory establishing the Apostolic Prefecture of Central Bengal.

On September 1, 1886, the Apostolic Vicariate of West Bengal was by Pope Leo XIII. charged with the Apostolic Constitution Humanae salutis to an archbishopric and renamed the Archdiocese of Calcutta. The Archdiocese of Calcutta announced on May 25, 1927 from parts of its territory to the founding of the Diocese of Ranchi. For more territorial concessions were made on 15 February 1929 for the establishment of the mission sui juris Sikkim, on June 14, 1951 establishing the bishopric of Sambalpur, on 17 January 1952 establishing the Apostolic Prefecture of Malda, on 2 July 1962 on the establishment of the Diocese of Jamshedpur, on 8 June 1968 establishing the Apostolic Prefecture of Balasore, on 30 May 1977 on the establishment of the Diocese of Baruipur and on 24 October 1997 establishing the diocese of Asansol.

Territory

The Archdiocese of Calcutta comprises the districts of Bankura, Howrah, Hooghly, Kolkata, Pashchim Medinipur, Purba Medinipur and Uttar 24 Pargana in West Bengal and Bhutan.
