Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cape Town

The Archdiocese of Cape Town (Latin: Archidioecesis Civitatis capitis ) is a location in South Africa, diocese of the Roman Catholic church located in Cape Town ( Western Cape ).

History

From 1652 Portuguese missionaries settled at the Cape. Jacob Abraham de Mist, High Commissioner of the Cape Colony, 1804 assured religious freedom and protection by the law on July 25. 1805, the Dutch missionary John Lansink was appointed as the first Prefect Apostolic. A year later, however, he was asked by the military government to leave the country. It was not until 1818 this was Pope Pius VII, the " Apostolic Vicariate of the Cape of Good Hope and adjacent areas " (now the Diocese of Port Elizabeth ) form, which included the islands of Mauritius. First Apostolic Administrator was the British Benedictine monk Bede Slater, OSB, was succeeded by his brother William Placid Morris Medal OSB.

On June 6, 1837 informed Pope Gregory XVI. the Apostolic Vicariate of the Cape of Good Hope to a part of the Western Cape of Good Hope and the Eastern Cape of Good Hope. For the first Administrator of the Western Cape of Good Hope, he appointed the Irish Dominican Father Patrick Raymund Griffith OP.

Pope Pius IX. founded on July 30, 1847 now the Vicariate Apostolic of the Western Cape of Good Hope and confirmed Bishop Patrick Raymund Griffith OP in office. On 24 May 1872, the prefecture of the central district was separated from the western Vicariate of the Cape of Good Hope. By decree by Pope Pius XII. from June 13, 1939 replaced the Congregation for the Evangelization of Peoples ( Propaganda Fide ) the name of the Vicariate on the western Cape of Good Hope " Apostolic Vicariate of Cape Town " ( " Civitatis capitis ").

With the reorganization of the church hierarchy in South Africa by Pius XII. It was raised on 11 January 1951 Archdiocese. Cape Town is a metropolitan see.
