Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Colombo
The Archdiocese of Colombo (Latin: Archidioecesis Columbensis in Taprobane ) is a location in Sri Lanka Roman Catholic archdiocese based in Colombo.
History
The Archdiocese of Colombo was born on December 3, 1834 by Pope Gregory XVI. out of territory of the diocese of Cochin diocese built as Ceylon. On February 17, 1845 Diocese of Ceylon was renamed the Diocese of Colombo.
On September 1, 1886, the Diocese of Colombo was by Pope Leo XIII. raised to an archbishopric. The Archdiocese of Colombo was born on June 7, 1887 Metropolitan diocese. On December 6, 1944, the Archdiocese of Colombo changed his name to an archbishopric in Colombo Ceylon. The Archdiocese of Colombo in Ceylon was renamed again in Archdiocese of Colombo on 22 May 1972.
