Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Nampula

The Archdiocese of Nampula (Latin: Archidioecesis Nampulensis ) is a location in Mozambique Roman Catholic archdiocese based in Nampula. It includes part of Nampula Province.

History

Pope Pius XII. founded the bishopric of Nampula with the Apostolic Constitution Sollemnibus Conventionibus on September 4, 1940 cessions of territory of the Archdiocese of Lourenço Marques, where there was also a suffragan. With the bull Quo efficacius it was raised on June 4, 1984 in the rank of Metropolitanerzbistums.

Parts of its territory it lost in favor of the establishment of the following dioceses:

  • April 5, 1957 to the bishopric of Porto Amélia;
  • July 21, 1963 to the Diocese of Vila Cabral;
  • October 11, 1991 to the bishopric of Nacala.
