Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Oviedo

The Archdiocese of Oviedo (Latin: Archidioecesis Ovetensis ) is an Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in Spain, based in Oviedo.

History

The diocese was erected 811. After the kings of Asturias had moved 912 their capital from Oviedo to Leon, it was quiet around the young diocese. But the beginning of the pilgrimage on the Way of St. James brought the city as the whole diocese of Oviedo a major economic, cultural and religious revival. During this time also flourished in the many monasteries.

The Reformation in the 16th century touched the life of the diocese and hardly even the Tridentine reform movement within the Catholic Church took a long years to take root here.

The diocese was elevated to the rank of an archbishopric in 1954 and united in its ecclesiastical province of the bishoprics of Astorga, Leon and Santander.
