Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Papeete

The Archdiocese of Papeete (Latin: Archidioecesis Papeetensis ) is an Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic Church in the French overseas country (POM = Pays d' outre- mer) in Polynesia with the Metropolitan seat Papeete. The Archdiocese comprises French Polynesia and the English Pitcairn Islands.

History

The territory of the South Sea Islands prefecture on June 8, 1833 In the Breve sublimi by Gregory XVI. divided into the Apostolic Vicariate Ostozeanien and Westozeanien.

On August 13, 1844 with the Breve Pastorale officium under the same Pope Gregory XVI. the Apostolic Prefecture Sandwich Islands, independently from the Apostolic Vicariate Apostolic Vicariate Ostozeanien.

The areas of the Apostolic Vicariate Ostozeanien were on 9 May 1848 Pope Pius IX. to the new Apostolic Vicariate Tahiti ( " Insularum Tahiti " ) and Marquesas ( " Insularum Marchesi " ) split; first Episcopal Vicar of Tahiti was Florentin- Etienne Jaussen. For annexations of the Apostolic Vicariate Tahiti Cook Islands were on November 27, 1922 by Pope Pius XI. intended for independent Apostolic Prefecture Cook Islands and Manihiki. On November 27, 1966, the Vicariate was by Pope Paul VI. raised to an archbishopric. First archbishop was Paul -Laurent -Jean -Louis Mazé SSCC.

As a suffragan of the Diocese of Taiohae o Tefenuaenata associated with the Archdiocese of Papeete.
