Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Patna

The Archdiocese of Patna (Latin: Archidioecesis Patnensis ) is a located in India Roman Catholic archdiocese based in Patna.

History

The diocese of Patna was posted on February 7, 1845 by Pope Gregory XVI. cessions of territory from the Apostolic Vicariate of Tibet - Hindustan built as Apostolic Vicariate of Patna. On August 1, 1886, the Apostolic Vicariate of Patna was dissolved and the territory was ceded to the Diocese of Allahabad.

On September 10, 1919, the former Apostolic Vicariate of Patna was established as a diocese of Patna again. The diocese of Patna was the archbishopric of Ranchi is a suffragan. On August 3, 1956, the Diocese of Patna were from parts of its territory establishing the Apostolic Prefecture of Bhagalpur. For more territorial concessions were made on 6 March 1980 on the establishment of the Diocese of Muzaffarpur and on 7 October 1983 on the establishment of the mission sui juris Nepal. On 16 March 1999, the Diocese of Patna was elevated by Pope John Paul II to the Pontifical Bull Indicos intra fines fidelium to an archbishopric. On 12 December 2005, the Archdiocese of Patna were parts of its territory from the foundation of the diocese of Buxar.

Territory

The Archdiocese of Patna comprises the districts of Aurangabad, Gaya, Jehanabad, Nalanda, Nawada, Patna and parts of Munger district in Bihar.
