Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Porto Alegre

The Archdiocese of Porto Alegre (Latin: Archidioecesis portalegrensis in Brasilia ) is a Roman Catholic diocese based in the Brazilian city of Porto Alegre in the state of Rio Grande do Sul.

First Jesuit missionaries who came from Paraguay in this part of Brazil, were attested in writing about 1626. Forerunner of today's diocese is on May 7, 1848, Pope Pius IX. founded diocese of São Pedro do Rio Grande, then a suffragan of the Archdiocese founded 1551 São Salvador da Bahia. On August 15, 1910, the bishopric was renamed and elevated to the Archdiocese of Porto Alegre today. Between 1910 and 2008, several dioceses were carved out of the Archdiocese and this under as suffragan dioceses.
