Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Rhodes

The Rhodes (Dodecanese ) located in Greece immediate Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Rhodes (Latin: Archidioecesis Rhodiensis ) was established on March 28, 1928 and has a size of 2714 km ². On its surface 150,000 people, of which, however, only 1,500 (1%) are Catholic life. 1950 were only 450 ( 0.4 %) in total 117 275 inhabitants of the territory of the Catholic denomination.

The three parishes of the diocese, which has no diocesan priests, led by two Franciscans. Since the death of the Archbishop Acciari, in 1970, Rhodes does not have its own bishop more, but is managed by the respective Archbishop of Athens as an administrator.

Even at the time of the Crusades and the time of St. John on the island there was a Latin diocese, which has gone down with the Ottoman conquest. The former Roman Catholic cathedral ( " Our Lady of the Castle" ) of Rhodes, which is located in the old town at the beginning of the Knight Street, now houses a museum.

The archdiocese includes all the islands of the Dodecanese. The cathedral is dedicated to St. Francis of Assisi, who is also patron of the diocese. In addition to the two Catholic churches in Rhodes, there is a Kos.

The Archdiocese is under the hl. Chair directly is so exemt. Under him are no further suffragans.
