Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Shillong

The Archdiocese of Shillong (Latin: Archidioecesis Shillongensis ) is a located in India Roman Catholic archdiocese based in Shillong.

History

The Archdiocese of Shillong was posted on December 13, 1889 by Pope Leo XIII. out of territory of the diocese of Krishnagar built as Apostolic Prefecture of Assam. The Apostolic Prefecture of Assam was posted on July 9, 1934 by Pope Pius XI. charged with the Apostolic Constitution Uberius ac felicius to the diocese and renamed Diocese Shillong. It was the Archdiocese of Calcutta is a suffragan. On 12 July 1951, the diocese of Shillong were parts of its territory from the foundation of the diocese Dibrugarh. Another area assignment was on 16 January 1964 on the establishment of the Diocese of Tezpur.

The Diocese of Shillong was posted on June 26, 1969 by Pope Paul VI. charged with the Apostolic Constitution sponsa Christi to an archbishopric and renamed the Archdiocese of Guwahati - Shillong. The Archdiocese of Guwahati - Shillong was renamed on January 22, 1970 in Archdiocese of Shillong - Guwahati. On March 1, 1973, the Archdiocese of Shillong - Guwahati were parts of its territory from the foundation of the Diocese of Tura. Another area assignment was completed on 5 December 1983 on the establishment of the Diocese of Diphu. On March 30, 1992, the Archdiocese of Shillong - Guwahati was divided into the Archdiocese of Shillong and the Diocese of Guwahati. The Archdiocese of Shillong announced on January 28, 2006 from parts of its territory to the founding of the dioceses Nongstoin and Jowai.

The Archdiocese of Shillong comprises the districts of Ri Bhoi, West Khasi Hills, East Khasi Hills and Jaintia Hills in the state of Meghalaya.
