The diocese of Valladolid was founded on 25 December 1595 with the Bull of Pope Clement VIII per excellenti, from areas of the diocese of Palencia. The establishment of the Diocese put the secular conflict between the abbot of Valladolid and the Bishop of Palencia an end.

1688, the " Nuestra Señora de la Asunción " ( Assumption) Cathedral was consecrated, the seat of the diocese. Later, after the Concordat between Spain and the Holy See had been signed in 1851, the diocese was raised on July 4, 1857 in the rank of Metropolitan diocese. In 1855 the seminary of the diocese was founded.

In 1955 the territory of the diocese has been considerably extended so that it corresponds to the province of Valladolid.
