Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vilnius

The Archdiocese of Vilnius (Latin: Archidioecesis Vilnensis, lit Vilniaus arkivyskupija. ) Is an archdiocese in eastern Lithuania and important part of the Roman Catholic Church in Lithuania.

History

The foundation of the Diocese of Vilnius goes back to the 14th century, when Lithuania was Christianized by the marriage of Jogaila Litauerfürsten with Hedwig of Anjou.

After Vilnius was annexed by Poland in 1922, the Holy See saw under Pope Pius XI. forced to rise next to the Lithuanian ecclesiastical province with headquarters in Kaunas also Vilnius on October 28, 1926 Archdiocese and Metropolitan Church. At the same time suffragans Kaišiadorys and Panevėžys were created by separation.

After the reorganization of the Lithuanian church in 1991 both ecclesiastical provinces remained. At the same time located in the Republic of Poland territories of the Archdiocese of Vilnius were raised to the bishopric of Białystok.
