Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Washington

Located in the U.S. Washington Archdiocese (Latin: Archidioecesis Vashingtonensis ) is an Archdiocese of the Roman Catholic church located in the capital of the United States of America, Washington, DC.

History

On November 15, 1947, the Archdiocese of Washington was established by dividing the Archdiocese of Baltimore - Washington based its own archbishop, but was under the Archdiocese of Baltimore, suffragan.

On October 12, 1965, was raised to the Metropolitan diocese and assigned him the bishopric of Saint Thomas suffragan. On May 28, 1974, some areas have been submitted for the newly erected Diocese of Arlington.

Structure

To the territory of the Archdiocese next to the District of Columbia include Montgomery County, Prince George's County, Saint Mary's County, Calvert County and Charles County in Maryland.

The Archbishop of Washington currently support three auxiliary bishops. Since 1967, so far all Archbishops of Washington were added to the College of Cardinals.

The largest church in the archdiocese is not St. Matthew's Cathedral, but in 1961 completed the National Shrine Basilica of the Immaculate Conception.

The Archdiocese is also the recipient of numerous charitable institutions. Belonging among others 3 hospitals, 16 homes for the elderly, the chronically ill and disabled, 49 disabled facilities and 16 health centers. Also located on the territory of the Archdiocese of three colleges / universities, 17 high schools and 91 primary schools in church-run.
