Roman Catholic Diocese of Atakpamé

The diocese Atakpamé (Latin Dioecesis Atakpamensis ) is a diocese in Togo, a bishopric is the cathedral in Atakpamé. The diocese comprises 13,453 km ² with the Togolese prefectures Ogou, Blitta, Est - Mono, Amou and Wawa in the north of the Plateaux region and a population of 700,000, of which approximately 37 % Roman Catholic faith. In the 29 parishes of the Archdiocese in 2006 had 56 diocesan priests and one religious priests.

History

The first mission in Atakpamé was built in 1862, but abandoned in 1887 after supporters of the local fetish cult had poisoned the priests. 1892 Divine Word Missionaries open the mission again. On September 29, 1964, the diocese was divided Atakpamé from the Archdiocese of Lomé. The first bishop Berard Oguki - Atakpah had to resign on April 10, 1976 after public criticism of the regime Gnassingbé Eyadéma, Notre -Dame de la Trinité Cathedral was destroyed on May 1 by the military. The newly named Bishop Philippe Fanoko Kossi Kpodzro was denied to 1980 the gateway to Atakpamé.
