The diocese of Autun (Latin: Dioecesis Augustodunensis ) is a diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in France which extends over the area of the department of Saône -et -Loire. Bishop since 2006 Benoît Rivière.

History

The history of the Church in the diocese of Autun today goes back up to the two martyrs Valérien in Tournus and Marcel in Chalon -sur- Saone, who preached there at the end of the 2nd century. In the 3rd century the diocese was canonically erected. 1801, the territories of the bishoprics of Chalons -sur -Saône and Clamecy as well as parts of the Diocese of Mâcon were added to it. 1962 was also combined with the Territorial Abbey of Cluny. Therefore, it is formally named the diocese of Autun ( - Chalon -sur- Saône- Mâcon- Cluny ). Until 2002 it was suffragan of Lyon, now it belongs to the Archdiocese of Dijon.
