Roman Catholic Diocese of Bissau

The Diocese of Bissau (Latin: Dioecesis Bissagensis ) is located in Guinea- Bissau Roman Catholic diocese based in Bissau.

History

The Diocese of Bissau was on September 4, 1940, Pope Pius XII. with the Apostolic Constitution Sollemnibus Conventionibus out of territory of the Diocese of Santiago de Cabo Verde as a mission sui juris Portuguese Guinea erected. The mission sui juris Portuguese Guinea was posted on April 29, 1955 by Pius XII. elevated to the Apostolic Prefecture. On January 1, 1975, the Apostolic Prefecture of Portuguese Guinea was renamed Prefecture Apostolic of Guinea- Bissau.

The Prefecture Apostolic of Guinea- Bissau on March 21, 1977 Pope Paul VI. charged with the Apostolic Constitution Rerum catholicarum to the diocese and renamed Diocese of Bissau. On 13 March 2001, the Diocese of Bissau were parts of its territory from the foundation of the Diocese of Bafatá.
