Roman Catholic Diocese of Cairns

The Diocese of Cairns (Latin: Dioecesis Cairnensis ) is a location in Australia diocese of the Roman Catholic church located in Cairns, Queensland. It comprises the northern part of Queensland.

History

Pope Pius IX. founded the Apostolic Vicariate of Queensland on 30 January 1877 cession of territory of the Diocese of Brisbane. The Italian missionaries who remained until 1884, met with the resistance of local Irish laity. The disagreements were terminated by an interdict in November 1883, the Apostolic Vicar Paul Fortini had to leave the town of Herberton. Then, the Apostolic Vicariate was given to the Augustinians of Ireland, which overcame the lack of clergy with appeals from abroad. On 10 May 1887, took the name of the Apostolic Vicariate of Cooktown. On 8 July 1941 the Curia of Cooktown was moved to Cairns and elevated to diocese with its current name.

The area of the diocese was at the church Thursday Iceland, originally lay in the part of the Apostolic Vicariate of Queensland, in 1885 it became part of the Diocese of Victoria, extended on 14 February 1967. On 28 May 1967, the foundation stone of the new cathedral was laid, which was dedicated on July 8, 1968.
