History

Legend Aryan tradition, according to the diocese was founded in the 5th century by the Holy Ninian. From the 8th and 9th centuries the names of some Anglo-Saxon bishops have survived. Then the history of the diocese is largely in the dark, in the 12th century it appears under King Fergus as Whithorn diocese back in the sources. It was under the jurisdiction of the Archbishop of York until 1492, after the survey to the archbishopric of Glasgow, this was slammed. With the adoption of the " Scots confession " by the Scottish Parliament in 1560, was the break with Rome. The number of the bishops of Galloway rips but only from 1688 in the wake of turmoil in the Church of Scotland.

The modern bishopric of Galloway was born on March 4, 1878 as part of the restructuring of the Catholic Church in Scotland by Pope Leo XIII. built with the Zirkumskriptionsbulle Ex supremo Apostolatus apice from the new Archdiocese of Glasgow out. In 1997, the diocese with great effort celebrated the 1600jährige existence, starting from the legendary founding year 397 by St. Ninian.
