Roman Catholic Diocese of Groningen-Leeuwarden

The diocese of Groningen- Leeuwarden (Latin Dioecesis Groningensis - Leovardiensis, Dutch Bisdom Groningen Leeuwarden ) is one of the seven Roman Catholic dioceses of the Dutch church province.

The diocese covers parts of the province of Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe.

History

The first diocese of Groningen was founded on May 12, 1559 from the merger of outsourced parts of the dioceses of Utrecht and Münster and existed until the Reformation 1594th The former cathedral was the church of St. Martin.

The diocese was founded on July 16, 1955 re- erected as a diocese of the Archdiocese of Utrecht Groningen from areas whose suffragan it was. On 26 November 2005, the diocese was called the " Diocese of Groningen- Leeuwarden ."
