History

In the late Roman period (4th and 5th century) was under the Bishop of Krk the Metropolis of Salona, since the early Middle Ages, the Patriarch of L' Aquila. In the 15th century Krk was subordinated to the Patriarch of Grado and integrated in the Venetian state church system.

In 1828, the small bishoprics Rab and Cres were dissolved and their lands subject to the Bishop of Krk.

Up to the liturgical reform of the Second Vatican Council, the Mass was in many churches in the Old Slavic rite, that is not celebrated in Latin, but in old Croatian language. In the diocese significant, Croatian Glagolitic monuments have been preserved, such as the Baska tablet and the Valun Tablet. Bishop Antun Mahnič (1896-1920) promoted the ancient Slavic rite and the Glagolitic culture.

In 1990, the diocesan Caritas of Krk was founded.
