Roman Catholic Diocese of Kyiv-Zhytomyr

The Diocese of Zhytomyr - Kyiv (Latin: Dioecesis Kioviensis - Zytomeriensis ) is a Roman Catholic diocese in northern Ukraine. The parish system today comprises the Zhytomyr Oblasts, Kyiv, Chernihiv and Cherkasy.

History

The Diocese of Kiev was founded in 1321. The first bishops are bishops mission. Under Bishop Clemens ( 1466-73 ) Kiev is permanent bishopric. He built a cathedral. Between 1626 and 1751, the co-cathedral in Zhytomyr, the present cathedral of the Diocese of Kyiv - Zhytomyr, built. 1778 was the annexation of the territory by Russia and the repeal of the Diocese of Kiev. Under pressure from the Orthodox Church in what was then the Russian Empire -listed town of no Catholic bishop was allowed to reside more. 1798, the Diocese of Kiev was rebuilt based in Zhytomyr and united with the Diocese of Lutsk Lutsk - to Zhytomyr. In 1925, the separation into two separate dioceses Lutsk and Zhytomyr; In 1998, the name change by Pope John Paul II in Kyiv - Zhytomyr. In 2002, the eastern part of the diocese was divided into the Diocese of Kharkiv - Zaporizhia.

Diocese

On June 15, 2011 Pope Benedict XVI appointed. the Franciscan Father Petro Herkulan Maltschuk OFM with a personal title of archbishop ( " ad personam " ) to the Chief Shepherd of the Diocese of Zhytomyr - Kyiv. The inauguration on August 5, 2011 in St. Andrew's Church (Kiev ) was the first since 1680 in the Ukrainian capital Kiev itself; Malchuk also is the first chief shepherd of the diocese, who holds the title of archbishop.
