Roman Catholic Diocese of Laghouat

The diocese Laghouat (Latin: Dioecesis Laghuatensis ) is a location in Algeria Roman Catholic diocese based in Ghardaia.

It was founded on July 19, 1901 as Apostolic Prefecture of Ghardaia (Latin Ghardaiensis ), but changed its name on 10 January 1921 on Apostolic Prefecture Ghardaia nel Sahara (Latin for Ghardaiensis in Sahara), was on June 10, 1948 Apostolic Vicariate before he was raised there on 14 September 1995 under the name Laghouat to the diocese.

The 2.10778 million km ² large diocese counted in 1950 12,241 believers. Today there are still only 2,000 Catholics who live partly in the great desert areas of the Sahara or in the vicinity of the oil resources of the country ( 0.1 % of the population ).
