History

Background to the diocesan territory

In Roman times it was a major part of the diocesan territory of the province of Noricum. After the city survey ( municipium ) of Lauriacum (now Lorch ) in the year 212 there should have been a bishop's seat. In the year 304 40 Christians were killed, among them St. Florian, martyr and may have been buried in Lauriacum. In the 5th century, a bishop is mentioned by the name of Constantius in the Vita Sancti Severini in Lauriacum.

After the barbarian invasions and Frankish missionaries proclaimed iroschottische Christianity. In the year 739, St. Boniface put the diocesan limits so that Upper Austria came to the diocese of Passau. Until about 903 Lorch is attested as the seat of a bishop's choir (country bishop).

Due to the incursions of the Magyars many church structures were destroyed. After the Battle of Lechfeld ( 955 ) Bishop Pilgrim began with the rebuilding. As of 1065 the bishops Altmann and Ulrich began to divide the diocesan territory in parishes.

At the time of the Reformation in the 16th century, especially the nobles promoted the new faith and a large part of the population was Protestant. Through the Counter-Reformation Upper Austria was predominantly Catholic back in the 17th century.

History of the Diocese of Linz

Emperor Joseph II forced the diocese of Passau with an agreement dated July 4, 1784 to surrender their parishes in Upper Austria and founded the Diocese of Linz. With a papal bull dated January 28, 1785, Pope Pius VI approved. about. First bishop of Linz was the Passau Vicar General and Auxiliary Bishop of Freising Ernest Johann Nepomuk von Herber stone. This canonical installation accompanies the elevation of the land portion to the Crown Land Austria above the Enns, after it had already been politically centuries part of the Duchy of Austria.
