Roman Catholic Diocese of Marquette

The Diocese of Marquette (Latin: Dioecesis Marquettensis ) is located in Michigan in the United States Roman Catholic diocese based in Marquette.

History

Pope Pius IX. founded the Apostolic Vicariate Obermichigan on July 29, 1853 from cessions of territory of the Diocese of Detroit.

On January 9, 1857 was raised to the bishopric of Sault Sainte Marie, which was the Archdiocese of Cincinnati assumed as suffragan. The name of the diocese of Sault Sainte Marie- Marquette took it on 23 October 1865.

On January 12, 1875 it became part of the ecclesiastical province of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee. On January 3, 1937, adopted its present name. On 22 May the same year it became part of the ecclesiastical province of the Archdiocese of Detroit.

Territory

The Diocese of Marquette thus comprises the Upper Peninsula Counties Alger, Baraga, Chippewa, Delta, Dickinson, Gogebic, Houghton, Iron, Keweenaw, Luce, Mackinac, Marquette, Menominee, Ontonagon and Schoolcraft Michigan State.
