Roman Catholic Diocese of Monterey in California

The Diocese of Monterey in California ( Latin: Dioecesis Montereyensis in California) is a located in the United States Roman Catholic diocese based in Monterey, California.

History

The Diocese of Monterey in California was on April 27, 1840 by Pope Gregory XVI. with the Apostolic Constitution Apostolicam sollicitidinem out of territory of the Diocese of Sonora erected as Diocese of California and the Archdiocese of Mexico City is a suffragan. The Diocese of California was renamed on November 20, 1849 in Diocese of Monterey. On July 29, 1853 Diocese of Monterey was from parts of its territory to the creation of the Archdiocese of San Francisco, where it was a suffragan. The Diocese of Monterey was renamed on July 7, 1859 in Diocese of Monterey - Los Angeles. On June 1, 1922, the Diocese of Monterey - Los Angeles was divided into the dioceses of Monterey - Fresno and Los Angeles - San Diego. The Diocese of Monterey - Fresno was transferred to the Archdiocese of Los Angeles as suffragan on 11 July 1936. On October 6, 1967, the Diocese of Monterey - Fresno in the dioceses of Fresno and Monterey in California was divided.
