Roman Catholic Diocese of Ostrava-Opava

The Diocese of Ostrava - Opava (Latin: Dioecesis Ostraviensis - Opaviensis, tschech.: Biskupství Ostravsko - Opavské ) is the latest diocese of the Roman Catholic Church in the Czech Republic.

It was dissolved on 30 May 1996 by Pope John Paul II from the Archdiocese of Olomouc with the Apostolic Constitution Ad christifidelium spirituali and this is a suffragan. It includes Moravian-Silesian Region and areas in northern Moravia. Bishop is František Václav Lobkowicz. He lives in Ostrava, where in 1998-2000 a new diocesan center was built.

The area of the diocese also includes that area, which originally represented the lying in Czechoslovakia part of the Archdiocese of Wroclaw. This Moravian -Silesian part was only in 1978 affiliated with the Archdiocese of Olomouc.

Bishops

František Lobkowicz OPraem, was appointed by Pope John Paul II, the first bishop of the newly erected Diocese of Ostrava - Opava on 30 May 1996.
