Roman Catholic Diocese of Port Elizabeth

The Diocese of Port Elizabeth (Latin: Portus Dioecesis Elizabethensis ) is a location in South Africa, Roman Catholic diocese based in Port Elizabeth.

History

The Diocese of Port Elizabeth was established on June 18, 1818 by Pope Pius VII as Apostolic Vicariate of Cape of Good Hope from areas of the Diocese of São Tomé and the Territorialprälatur Mozambique. The Apostolic Vicariate of Cape of Good Hope was divided on 30 July 1847 in an Eastern District and Western District. On 15 November 1850, Apostolic Vicariate of Cape of Good Hope, Eastern District were parts of its territory from the Apostolic Vicariate establishing Natal. The Apostolic Vicariate of Cape of Good Hope, Eastern District announced on June 4, 1886 parts of its territory from the Apostolic Vicariate of Kimberley establishing in Orange. Other annexations took place on June 12, 1923 establishing the Apostolic Prefecture Gariep and on 20 February 1929 for the establishment of the mission sui juris Queenstown. On 13 June 1939, the Apostolic Vicariate of Cape of Good Hope, Eastern District was renamed as Apostolic Vicariate of Port Elizabeth.

The Apostolic Vicariate of Port Elizabeth was born on January 11, 1951 by Pope Pius XII. applicable to the diocese and the Archdiocese of Cape Town is a suffragan.
