Roman Villa Borg

The Roman Villa Borg is an archaeological open-air museum in the village of Borg of Saarland Perl community in the district Merzig- Wadern. The museum consists of an exposed and reconstructed Roman villa rustica. The facility is supported by the Cultural Foundation Merzig- Wadern.

Excavation findings and reconstruction

Once in Borg hindeuteten archaeological finds on a villa rustica almost 100 years ago, in 1987 planned excavations were begun. After evaluation and assessment of the finds was decided in 1994 to reconstruct the entire historic facility according to the findings. Overall, the building or structure that propagates incl courtyard area of ​​an area of ​​7.5 ha, three wings. The first building, a tavern and the villa baths were completed in 1997. The manor with the museum facility and the courtyard were opened to the public in 1999. The third wing of the building with residential and commercial areas were completed in 2001. The gatehouse was also rebuilt.

The manor house, whose reconstruction is also used as a regional museum of archaeological finds is transverse to the central axis of the system. It has a large reception hall with an area of ​​100 m²; the equipment was made ​​on the basis of found remains from Borg and the general knowledge on such Roman buildings. The furniture, doors, windows and hot water boiler of the heating chamber are constructed according to ancient models. The reconstructed Roman bath demonstrates, among other things, the function of a Hypokaustums. The restaurant in the Roman tavern offering food to recipes of Apicius.

In 2000, also open to the public garden was built by the Roman model in the system during the project Gardens without Limits.

From July to September 2013 Roman glass workshop was reconstructed, which was operated following in October 2013 for the first time as ' Borg Furnace Project ' experimentally. Other projects with Roman glass are planned.

Events

Supported by a Friends of place on the grounds of the villa every year a number of events. The spectrum ranges from exhibitions on garden tours, literary and culinary evenings, baking demonstrations and concerts. Of particular note are the International Reenactmentmesse IRM in the spring and the Roman Festival on the first weekend in August. Regulars in the Roman Day program are legions of Bitburg and Switzerland and a gladiator group of Pannonia. First time in 2011 Roman horsemanship was demonstrated.
