Romano Pontifici Eligendo

Romano Pontifici Eligendo is an Apostolic Constitution of Pope Paul VI. , Which was released on 1 October 1975. With this constitution, the procedures on the vacant Apostolic See, the funeral and the papal election ( conclave ) are arranged.

This Apostolic Constitution is the successor:

  • The promulgated on December 25, 1904 Apostolic Constitution " Sede Apostolica Vacante " of Pius X,
  • Of the Motu Proprio "Cum Proxime " of Pius XI. from March 1, 1922 as well as its Apostolic Constitution " Quae divinus " of 25 March 1935
  • Of the Apostolic Constitution " Vacantis Apostolicae Sedis " of Pius XII. December 8, 1945
  • Of the Motu Proprio " Summi Apostolicae Sedis " of the Sel. John XXIII. from September 5, 1962

The document refers to two rituals that are to be prepared: one for the funeral of the Pope, the other for the rites of the conclave; it also mentions eleven years (1964 ) after the resignation of personal Tiara by Pope Paul VI. during the Second Vatican Council but, amazingly, the solemn coronation of the new Pope in point 92: " Finally, the Pope will be crowned by the cardinal deacon, and within a reasonable time, the taking possession of the Patriarchal Lateran Basilica will take place, according to the prescribed ritual. " Thus it is demonstrated that Paul VI. the coronation of the pope and wearing the tiara not generally intended to abolish, but that he wanted to know this meant merely as a personal act for the duration of his pontificate so.

Paul VI. Reaffirms that the number of cardinal electors should not exceed 120, he continues to orders that only cardinals were eligible to vote who have not yet reached the age of 80. Pope John Paul II took over and confirmed in the Apostolic Constitution " Universi Dominici Gregis " by 1996 these provisions.
