Romanus of Condat

Romanus of Condat (* about 400 in Burgundy, † 463 or 464 in Saint -Claude ) is a hermit, a saint of the Roman Catholic Church and Monastery founders. He is also known by the French form of the name Saint Romain de Condat.

At the age of 35 years Romanus left his family and spent some time in Ainay monastery near Lyon. Then he retired to live as a hermit. In the year 444 he was ordained a priest by Bishop Hilary of Arles. Together with his brother, the holy Lupicinus, he founded around 450 in the region of Haut-Jura several monasteries, including Condat (now Saint -Claude ), Leuconne, with his sister Iola the convent of La Beaume (now Saint- Romain- de -Roche ) and probably Romainmôtier in the Canton of Vaud ( Switzerland ). Romanus took over as first abbot until his death in the line of the monastery Condat.

He was buried in Pratz in Franche -Comte in the monastery of La Beaume, where his relics are kept.

His feast day is named after him 28 February ( leap years February 29 ), Romanustag. The Bauer rule for this day is: Sankt Roman bright and clear means a good year.
