Romas Ubartas

Romas Ubartas ( born May 26, 1960 in Panevėžys ) is a former Lithuanian athlete who took until 1990 for the Soviet Union. He was 1992 Olympic champion in discus throw.

His first major victory could Romas Ubartas at the European Championships 1986, the people as he with 67.08 m Discus throw won. He had six inches ahead of Georgi Kolnootschenko. The Lithuanians Vaclavas Kidykas number three completed the triple success of the Soviet Union.

At the World Championships in 1987 Jürgen Schult won from the GDR. Ubartas finished with 65.50 m in sixth place.

In May 1988, Ubartas threw 70.06 m personal best. The end of September Ubartas approached at the Olympic Games in Seoul. Jürgen Schult won with 68.82 m. Ubartas was up to the fifth round in second place, as it exceeded the federal German Rolf Dannebergplatz with 67.38 m. Ubartas could counter with his last attempt. He won the silver medal with 67.48 meters.

Lithuania declared its independence in 1990, but this was not recognized until a year later. And so Ubartas occurred also at the European Championships in 1990 for the Soviet Union. He was charged with 63.70 m fifth.

1992, Lithuania became the first time since the 1930s, again with its own team in the Olympics. The only gold medal in Barcelona won Romas Ubartas. With 65.12 meters he could Jürgen Schult exceed 18 centimeters.

At the World Championships in 1993 Ubartas finished with 65.24 m in fourth place. This placement was deprived him later because of doping offenses. He was tested positive for the anabolic steroid boldenone and was suspended for four years.

After his doping suspension Ubertas competed at the 2000 Olympic Games, but did not reach the final. At a height of 2.02 m his competition weight was 123 kg.
