Rome General Peace Accords

The General Peace Agreement of Rome was signed on October 4, 1992 between the opposing parties to the Mozambican civil war and ended the raging since 15 years of war between the ruling party FRELIMO and the rebel RENAMO. The negotiations began in July 1990 and had been conducted by a team of four mediators. These were two members of the Catholic Community of Sant'Egidio, Andrea Riccardi and Matteo Zuppi, as well as Bishop Jaime Gonçalves and Mario Raffaelli behalf of the Government of Italy. The Delegation of the FRELIMO was led by Armando Guebuza ( the reigning since 2005 President of Mozambique ) and RENAMO delegation of Raul Domingos. The agreement was signed by then President and FRELIMO leader Joaquim Chissano and RENAMO by the Chief of Afonso Dhlakama.
