Ron Lyle

Ron Lyle ( born February 12, 1941 in Dayton, Ohio, † November 26, 2011 in Denver, Colorado) was an American heavyweight boxer.

Life

Ron Lyle was one of 19 children of William and Nellie Lyle. In the early 1960s he was sentenced to a prison term of 15 to 25 years for manslaughter, but of which he had to serve seven and a half years in state prison of Colorado. He is said to have the 21 -year-old Douglas Byrd shot in the course of a belt dispute.

Only at the age of 30 years, Lyle was a professional boxer in 1971. He quickly became famous due to its great impact. So he broke 1972 Buster Matthis Sr. kurzrundig KO. But in 1973 he lost up against the veteran Jerry Quarry on points. In the same year he defeated Jurgen Blin by KO in the third round, thus ending his career. Blin gave in interviews very impressed with the clout Lyles, especially compared to Muhammad Ali.

After point victories against Óscar Bonavena and Jimmy Ellis in 1975 he lost the counter boxer Jimmy Young. Yet he, not Young received a world title chance against Ali, whom he defeated by technical knockout in the 11th round. After a heavy right cross from Ali he staggered into the ropes and had to plug in other stuff. Since he no longer seemed able to defend himself, the referee stopped the fight. He had performed at this time on all three labels. After the fight, Lyle and his team expressed their displeasure about this decision because Lyle was not depressed and the fight after their Auffasuung was canceled too early. After a knockout against Earnie Shavers, he met George Foreman. After one and a half years of inactivity since losing the heavyweight title to Ali, the two clashed. Lyle went hard in the 5th round KO after he had Foreman twice on the ground. The Ring Magazine has named this conflict to the fight of the year. The battle also became a legend because he is regarded as one of the few meeting such high-impact strong boxer, where it actually came to the open exchange of blows often expected in advance, whereas most of these fights are often marked by extreme caution both fighters until towards the ceasefire.

In 1976, he lost a second time against Jimmy Young and despite a victory over Joe Bugner began his descent, so that he in 1980 after a first-round KO by the undefeated Gerry Cooney finished his career. In 1995 he graduated at the age of 54 years, four more fights against unknown opponents that he could defeat kurzrundig by knockout.

He most recently worked as a coach.
