Ron Nachman

Ron Nachman (Hebrew רון נחמן; born August 6, 1942 in Tel Aviv, † January 18, 2013 in Petah Tikva ) was an Israeli politician and founder of the present city of Ariel - one of the largest Israeli settlements in the West Bank. From 1985 until his death he was the first and only mayor.

In 1989, during the first intifada, he made the suggestion that Palestinians who worked in the settlement, should be required to wear a specific badge to clothing, which they identity cards as a foreign worker. Then determined the prosecution against him on suspicion of incitement to racism. Critics compared the badge with the yellow Star of David, had to wear during the time of National Socialism the Jews. Nachman called the investigation a " theater of the absurd ".

From 1992 to 1996 he was a member for Likud Knesset.

Ron Nachman died after a long battle with cancer on January 18, 2013. He left behind his wife Dorit and four daughters.

In April 2013, he was posthumously awarded the Israel Prize for lifetime achievement.
