Ronald Stevenson

Ronald Stevenson ( born March 6, 1928 in Blackburn) is a Scottish composer and pianist. He achieved fame in particular by Dmitri Shostakovich dedicated his piano composition " Passacaglia on DSCH ".

The son of a Scottish father and a Welsh mother studied at the Royal Manchester College of Music. In the 1950s he moved to Scotland.

His works are influenced by the music of Ferruccio Busoni and influenced by his friendship with John Ogdon. In addition to the 1960 incurred up to 1962 " Passacaglia on DSCH " for piano (whose performance lasts about 75 minutes), he created among other things, two piano concertos, a violin and a cello concerto, songs, chamber music, and in 2008 premiered choral symphony Ben Dorain. He also created in the tradition of Busoni, Percy Grainger and Leopold Godowsky numerous transcriptions for piano.

Stevenson also acts as a teacher and is Vice President of the Workers' Music Association, Patron of ArtSong Collective and the European Piano Teachers ' Association, member of the Royal Society of Musicians of Great Britain, and the Composers' Guild of Great Britain. He received an honorary doctorate from the Universities of Aberdeen, Dundee and Stirling as well as an Honorary Fellow of the Royal Incorporation of Architects in Scotland.
