Ronaldo Miranda

Ronaldo Miranda ( born April 26, 1948 in Rio de Janeiro) is a Brazilian composer.

Miranda studied at the Music School of the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro piano and composition. He began his career in 1974 as a critic for the Jornal do Brasil, but after he da Música Brasileira Contemporânea ( II Biennial of Contemporary Brazilian Music ) won the first prize at the II Bienal in 1977, he turned increasingly to composition. In the early 1980s, Miranda won several composition competitions, including the prestigious 1981 Troféu Golfinho de Ouro, which is awarded by the government of Rio de Janeiro. In 1984, he ended the cooperation with the Jornal do Brasil.

Thanks to its composition Variações Sinfónicas, commissioned by the Orquestra Sinfonica de São Paulo, 1982 Miranda was named the best composer of the year. 1984 made ​​the French Ministry of Culture him a Chevalier dans l' Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Thanks to a donation of a fund in São Paulo, he could write his opera Dom Casmurro, which was first performed in May 1992 at the Theatro Municipal in São Paulo. In the 1990s, his works were often performed at contemporary music festivals in Brazil, Spain, Austria, Germany and Hungary, and in 2004 at EJCF in Basel.

Miranda works besides a professor at the Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro and is currently director of the Sala Cecília Meireles, a large concert hall in Rio de Janeiro.

On 22 September 2006 his opera A Tempestade, with self -written libretto, premiered at the Theatro São Pedro in São Paulo. It is a reworking of the play The Tempest in Portuguese by William Shakespeare.

On 28 June 2007 his String Quartet was premiered at the Theatro Municipal texturas in São Paulo.
