A characteristic feature of the species is the striking massive beak with an upturned lower mandible and a straight beak first. His reputation consists of noisy tree -tree -tree- trills.

The life and habitat

Of his life little is known. Its habitat is the terra - firme rain forest, which is dominated by dense wine roots. When foraging it remains at two to five feet above the ground.

Status

After the discovery of a female in 1986 in the Terra typica at Ji- Paraná in Rondônia and a suspected sighting of a male at Alta Floresta, Mato Grosso in 1989, the type was initially lost. 2004, a couple at the Rio Sucunduri, Amazon and in May 2006 was observed another couple at Reserva Jaru Biológica do in Ji- Paraná, Rondônia and recorded their vocals. While BirdLife International nor estimated the inventory in 2005 to less than 50 copies, recent observations demonstrated the ornithologists Dante Buzzetti and Bret Whitney from the years 2006 and 2007, that the species is more common than previously thought.

The main danger, the expansion of agriculture, road construction and commercial logging of the rainforest apply. The forest in the Terra typica is threatened by the construction of a dam.
