Ronnie Moore (speedway rider)

Ronald Leslie " Ronnie " Moore ( born March 8, 1933, Hobart in Tasmania, Australia ) is a former New Zealand - British Speedway rider and world champion in 1954 and 1959, who has been an active racing driver from 1948 to 1975.

Life

Although a native Australian, he emigrated with his family even as a small child after school from New Zealand and grew up in Christchurch, where he, like Ivan Mauger and Barry Briggs also learned the art of Speedway driving. Unique to Ronnie Moore was that he as a 17 year old a professional contract in the British Speedway League in London at the Wimbledon Dons received in 1950 and already in September 1950 at the Speedway 's singles World Cup final took part at Wembley Stadium in London. At only 21, Moore was 1954 Speedway World Champion and was able to repeat this triumph in 1959. 1955, 1956 and 1960 he won the World Championship silver medal. With compatriot Ivan Mauger he won in 1970 for the Best New Zealand Pairs World Championship, he also took for the UK part of the Speedway World Team Cup. From 1950 to 1972 Ronnie Moore launched exclusively for the Wimbledon Dons in the British League. In 1975 he had to end his career abruptly as a result of a fall at the speedway in New South Wales in Australia, in which he had sustained significant head injury. In 1985 he received the Order of the British Queen Member of the Order of the British Empire ( MBE).
