Ronnie Self

Ronnie Self ( born July 5, 1938 in Tin Town, Missouri; † August 28, 1981 in Springfield, Missouri) was an American rockabilly musician.

Life

Childhood and youth

Ronnie Self was the eldest child of the railway worker Raymond Self and his wife Hazel Sprague. As a little boy he was interested in music and as a teenager he wrote his first song.

Career

After he had sent several demo tapes to various record companies, he met in 1956 the producers and managers Dub Albritton, who is also Red Foley had under contract. By Albritton Self was conveyed to the ABC Records. But his 1956 published plate Pretty Bad Blues ( A side) / Three Hearts Later ( B-side ) was hardly noticed by the public. Shortly thereafter, he took part in Albrittons Phillip Morris Caravan. Through the tour selfs popularity rose significantly. This resulted in the same year to a contract with Columbia Records. There he had in 1958 with Bop A Lena his only hit. Self, who was already married and had a son, but was then terminated by the Columbia Records.

Then he came at the Decca Records to a contract. His symptoms were there but with little success. Until the 1960s, he had as a composer still some small successes, and in subsequent rockabilly revival, he acquired fame in Europe.

Ronnie Self died on August 28, 1981 in Springfield, Missouri at the age of only 43 years. He was inducted posthumously into the Rockabilly Hall of Fame.
