Ronald ' Ronnie ' Andrew Whelan ( born September 25, 1961 in Dublin ) is a former Irish football player.

Whelan came in 1979 as a young player from Ireland to Liverpool. His Premier League debut came in 1981 and became a regular player in the left middle of the 1980s team as Ray Kennedy ended his career. With Liverpool he won the 1984 European Cup of Champions. He was involved in the 1985 European Cup final between Liverpool and Juventus, when it came to the disaster at Heysel in Heysel Stadium in Brussels.

With the Irish national team, he participated in Germany at the European Football Championship 1988. Overall, he played 53 international matches in which he scored 3 goals.

At Liverpool he ended his active career in 1994.
