Roodepoort

Province

Roodepoort is a city in the South African province of Gauteng. It belongs to the metropolitan municipality of the City of Johannesburg and is situated north- west of the center of Johannesburg.

Name

The name of Roodepoort originated from Dutch and means " Red Gate ", according to the present there red earth.

Geography

Roodepoort is situated at the western end of the Witwatersrand. 2001, the city had 326 416 inhabitants.

History

After in 1884 the brothers Struben had discovered on a nearby farm gold, permission was granted to reduce this, which meant the beginning of mining in the region. Due to the discovery of gold led to a increased colonization by gold miners in the places Roodepoort, Florida, Hamberg and Maraisburg that grew together later to a place. Although the gold mining not worth long term here, the town developed a rapid pace.

1904, the Roodepoort Municipality was established. 1977 was the area now under the name Roodepoort Roodepoort Maraisburg city rights.

Roodepoort has since 2000 not a separate city government more, but is part of the district 5 of the Greater Johannesburg Metropolitan Municipality.

Roodepoort is one of the fastest growing cities in South Africa. This is mainly the growing black middle class in the region and in Johannesburg attributed, but also founded in 2001, Monash South Africa, a branch of the Australian University Monash University.

Attractions

Roodepoort is known for its 300 -acre botanical garden, which is called in honor of the ANC member Walter Sisulu Walter Sisulu National Botanical Garden. Formerly it was called the Witwatersrand Botanical Gardens.
