Room to Read

The nonprofit organization Room to Read, based in San Francisco was founded in 2000 by American John Wood.

Foundation

John Wood was employed as a top manager at Microsoft for many years. A trip to Nepal late nineties led to quit his job at Microsoft and to turn to the development assistance Wood.

Objectives

The goal of Room to Read is to enable children early access to schools and books. Room to Read believes that the economic and social conditions of families, communities, countries and future generations can be improved through education. By 2015, Room to Read will give tens of millions of children in developing countries access to education.

Areas

Room to Read works in nine developing countries ( Nepal, Vietnam, Cambodia, Laos, Sri Lanka, India, Bangladesh, South Africa and Zambia) with local communities together to initiate solid education. This includes the construction of libraries and schools, the publishing of children's books in local languages ​​as well as the awarding of student scholarships for girls. The holistic and multi-faceted approach of Room to Read helps children get a good education, from which they will benefit for a lifetime.

Results so far

Since its inception, the organization has achieved a success through support and establishment:

  • Construction of 1,442 school buildings
  • Creation of 11,246 libraries
  • 9.4 million new children's books published in 22 languages. Four of them are minority languages
  • 10,590 girls be part of the Girls Scholarship Program
  • 149 girls have completed the scholarship program

Awards
