Roosevelt Field (shopping mall)

Roosevelt Field Mall is the name of a shopping mall in East Garden City on Long Iceland in the U.S. state of New York.

Architectural History

The mall was built in 1956 according to the designs of IM Pei and was at that time the largest shopping center in the world. In the main building there was a skating rink for skaters. However, this was removed, as the entire complex was renovated in the early 1970s. In this transformation the Roosevelt Field Mall also got a roof - until then it had been an open- air shopping center.

In the late 1990s, a new one took place. There was a second transaction level that permeates the entire building built.

Current situation

Today, the mall has a covered area of ​​203 452 square meters and over 270 individual transactions, the largest shopping center of its kind in New York State and the eleventh largest in the USA. ( By comparison, the largest German shopping center, the Ruhr- Park in Bochum area, has 126,000 square feet and 119 stores. )

  • The shopping center was named after the youngest son of U.S. President Theodore Roosevelt. Quentin Roosevelt had come during an air battle in the First World War in France, died.
  • The Roosevelt Field Mall was built on the meadows ( Roosevelt Field ), of which Charles Lindbergh in 1927 his plane Spirit of St. Louis started the historic transatlantic flight. To commemorate this, a plaque was installed.
